Policy Document on Promotion of Research

The St. Joseph’s College policy statement governing research, freedom of inquiry, thought, expression and publication is based on the basic premises of scholarly inquiry with integrity that aims at helping the faculty and the scholars achieve excellence and contribute to the societal development with compassion.

The college hereby affirms the following basic premises and principles concerning research:

  • Individual scholars should be free to select the subject matter of their choice for research, to seek support from any source for their work, and to enjoy the freedom to arrive at their own findings and conclusions.

  • The findings and conclusions should be made available for scrutiny and criticism.

  • Research procedures should not violate the established professional ethics pertaining to the personal rights of living beings.

  • Facilitate freedom of access to the research data, processes and conclusions.


Objectives of the Policy

The objectives of policy are:

  • To promote research, innovation and intellectual capital;

  • To integrate teaching and research as intertwined components;

  • To foster socially relevant researches aligned to human values and excellence;

  • To promote multidisciplinary research in basic as well as applied domains of science and humanities;

  • To network with industries, universities and other institutions of higher learning; and

  • To ensure integrity, quality and ethics in research.


Promotion of Research

The following steps shall be taken to promote research at St Joseph’s College:

  • To continually uphold an environment conducive to research by allocating infrastructural facilities, funds and other resources for research programs.

  • To provide necessary support and opportunities to researchers for writing research proposals, publications and patent filing.

  • To help the research advisors involved in extramural projects, PhD guidance, publishing in peer-reviewed / indexed journals and making presentations in International Conferences / Seminars / Symposia with cash incentives.

  • To encourage research habits among the faculties of Shift-II by offering fee-concessions for those pursuing PhD.


Thrust Areas

The college has identified the following activities as its thrust areas for promoting research in the campus

  • M Phil & Ph D Programmes
    The college shall offer scholarships for M.Phil. scholars with the aid of the funds allocated in the budget. It shall make it mandatory for every M.Phil. scholar to publish at least a research article in a journal of repute before the submission of M.Phil. dissertation. Regarding PhD programme, the research scholars are to follow the guidelines of the parent university.

  • Minor & Major Research Projects
    The college shall offer incentives, encouragement and technical assistance to the faculty to apply for research projects funded by government agencies as well as sponsored extramural agencies. The research projects are viewed as professional recognition of the contributions of the faculty and the college to the society.

  • Campus Publications
    The college resolves to reinforce the research activities of the campus by enhancing the frequency of publication of the multi-disciplinary in-house journal viz. RETELL which acts as a platform for sharing the research outcomes by the faculty of St. Joseph’s College and other institutions. Every department shall publish a discipline-specific journal to foster research at the department level. Adequate initiative shall be undertaken by the departments of Computer Science, English, History and Tamil to convert their existing publications as UGC-recognized journals.
